Warner Fokkens – A Life in Music

Music has the power to bring people together, move them and surprise them. This belief lies at the heart of Warner Fokkens’s musical life. For many years, he has pursued a varied and rewarding career as an organist, pianist, conductor and improviser, bringing music to life with passion, creativity and a deep sense of musical expression.

Warner studied organ, piano and church music at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. He further developed his skills in improvisation with distinguished teachers and attended masterclasses with internationally renowned musicians, including Gaston Litaize, John Cage and Olivier Messiaen. He later continued his studies with Leo van Doeselaar at the Hilversum Conservatory. This broad musical background has shaped his distinctive style, combining technical mastery with creativity and sensitivity.

Since 1987, Warner has run his own organ and piano teaching practice, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for music with students of all levels. He also enjoys working with choirs, ensembles, singers and instrumentalists. He is currently conductor of Sing for Joy, based in Maassluis, and the The Hague Police Male Choir Entre Nous. Alongside his conducting work, he is active as an accompanist, guest conductor and rehearsal pianist, bringing musicians together and helping them achieve their best.

Improvisation is an especially important part of Warner’s musical life. It gives him the freedom to explore new ideas and create music that is spontaneous, expressive and uniquely his own. His collaborations with a wide range of singers and instrumentalists continually inspire new musical encounters and creative possibilities.

Supporting young talent is another of Warner’s great passions. Since 2022, he has been chairman of Stichting Maassluise Muziekweek, the foundation behind the Jong Talent Concours Maassluis. This classical music competition gives young musicians aged 7 to 18 the opportunity to perform, gain valuable stage experience and develop their talents.

Warner’s musical activities regularly take him abroad. He gives concerts in southern France every year and has also performed in Germany, Belgium and Gran Canaria.

Whether performing at the organ or piano, conducting a choir or making music with fellow musicians, Warner is driven by a love of musical expression and the special connection that music creates between performers and audiences.
